ALGARVE CITIES AND VILLAGES
Silves
The city closest to Quinta da Luz is the historic city of Silves. Silves is the oldest town of the Algarve and has in the 11th century been one of Portugal's most important towns. At this time Silves was also a centre of culture, home to poets, chroniclers and lawmakers. It lost this status later on as well as its wealth and other cities gained importance. But in the second half of the 19th century dried fruit and, above all, cork brought new life and prosperity to the city, which became one of the main processing centres for those products. Today Silves is a city proud of its past, at the heart of a municipality with a thriving and increasingly diverse economy. Lagos
Lagos is a pretty city, a 30 minute drive from Quinta da Luz. In summer there is a hustle and bustle of tourists visiting the old churches and monuments, Prince Henry the seafarer is very present and there is lots to explore in the city. Fascinating points of interest can be found throughout the city that is proud of its history and the role it played in the voyages of exploration known as the Discoveries. Or are you looking for long beaches where the sand and the ocean stretch as far as the eye can see? Or do you prefer tiny beaches hidden among colourful rocks, far from the rest of the world? There is plenty of choice from among the wonderful beaches on Lagos’ coastline.
Monchique
Monchique is a 40 minute drive from us and a well-known mountain town with a long history and always a few degrees cooler than the Algarve towns being closer to the sea. Get some fresh air here in summer and go hiking. From Foia, the highest point in the Algarve, you have panoramic 360 degree views. The village of Caldas de Monchique is renowned for its spa waters.
BEACHES
The Algarve is known and loved for its great beaches. There are so many at the 200 kilometre Algarve coastline - from long and flat sandy beaches to small ones below the cliffs that can only be accessed by boat - everyone can find their perfect beach. In 2020 the Algarve was once again voted Best European Beach Destination at the World Travel Awards.
Closest beaches to our Quinta are the large Praia da Rocha in Portimão, Praia da Marinha near Lagoa and several others in between. Going to the beach takes about 20-30 minutes by car from Quinta da Luz.
SPORTS
If you like to be active in your holidays, there are plenty of things to do... First and foremost we think of golf here at the Algarve. There are more than ten different golf courses you can reach within a 30 minute drive from Quinta da Luz and we are happy to book teetimes for you and recommend the ones we like best. Have a look at our special offers, from time to time we do have special golf packages and also when booking more spontanously during your holidays, we can give you preferred greenfee rates for some of the courses. For those who enjoy hiking or biking, there are several great trails closeby for all levels. Recharge your batteries in the clean and fresh air around our Quinta, watch rare birds and let the green and blooming nature dazzle your senses. Ask us for tips where to go.
If you prefer water sports, there are possibilities for surfing, bodyboarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing and jet-skiing - whatever you like, almost everywhere at the Algarve coast cities in summer.

And not to forget: Motor sports! The race track in Portimao is only a 30 minute drive from Quinta da Luz! There are several races and if you like to race yourself, you can book laps in a sports car to experience the course yourself!
